Abroad

If you ever find yourself in Tokyo, make sure to make the day-trip to Kamakura. It’s a beach town about one hour’s train trip from Shibuya Station, with wonderful temples, food streets and an antique train ride along the shores of the beach and through the backstreets. Bicycles can be hired at the train station and make for a great way to explore the town. A magical place. (The soundtrack on this video is by Huzi, a Beijing electronic artist who’s really cool (and unfortunately really unknown)).

This is a track I recorded while living in Shanghai (circa 2003) overlaid with some footage from a New York trip.

The photos below show my Shanghai ‘studio’ and the view from my bedroom … There was a great indoor / outdoor, wet market just downstairs from my apartment. It’s probably not there anymore, but I’ll check one day.

This is a favourite photo from my time living in Tokyo. The juxtaposition between the 'salary-man', the funky teenagers, the lady dressed in traditional wear, the dog and the 'mama-chari' - not to mention the speeding train - always brings to mind the endless buzz and perceptual WOW of Tokyo.
